Cats show us their true feelings in ways that are not always obvious. When your feline friend exhibits certain behaviours they are communicating to you and sending you a message that may well display the way that they are feeling about you and the world.
We have gathered together five common positive behaviours and a brief explanation of their meanings so that you may better understand our feline friends.
Rubbing Their Head Against You
When a cat rubs its head or face against you it is marking you with its scent glands and claiming you as one of its own. This is a very secure and affectionate gesture that is not only complimentary to you as an owner but is a source of comfort for your feline friend.
Your Cat Stares Into Your Eyes
This gesture is again a source of affection. Researchers have stated that when your cat stares into your eyes and blinks, opens its eyes wide then stares and blinks again then that is the feline equivalent of giving you a kiss and can be interpreted that your cat both loves and trusts you.
Your Cat Displays Their Belly To You
Another affectionate and trusting gesture, when displaying their belly openly a cat is showing that they are comfortable enough to be vulnerable and potentially defenceless around you.
Openly displaying their furry underside while on their back shows that you have a cat that feels both loved and protected by you and is very complimentary to you as an owner.
Your Cat Follows You Around
A cat that follows you around is showing that they enjoy your company and is comfortable with you. Following you and jumping from surface to surface to get closer to you is a clear and positive indication that your cat loves you and wants to be as close as it can be with you.
This following behaviour when not associated with an imminent feeding time is certainly the most indicative loving gesture as, although your cat may be a very loving companion, any cat owner knows that most cats are not shy when it comes to communicating their needs and level of comfort expected from their human caretakers.
The Happy Tail Dance Gesture
Have you ever seen your cat hold their tail upright while showing a slight curve in the top of it?
This gesture is sometimes known as the ‘happy tail dance’ and is an expression of happiness and warmth from your kitty.
